Retinoids are the most clinically proven anti-aging ingredient in skincare. They are also the most commonly misused. Here is a six-week plan to introduce one without the redness, peeling and discouragement that drives most people to quit.
Start low and slow. Week one and two: apply a retinol 0.1–0.3% twice a week, only on perfectly dry skin, sandwiched between two layers of moisturizer (moisturizer — retinol — moisturizer). The sandwich method dilutes the active without losing efficacy and dramatically reduces irritation.
Week three and four: increase to three nights a week. Week five and six: every other night. After two months you can decide whether to step up to a stronger concentration (0.5%) or a prescription tretinoin.
Three rules save you from beginner mistakes. First, never use retinoid on the same night as an exfoliating acid, vitamin C, or benzoyl peroxide — the combinations are not synergistic, they are destructive. Pick your active for the night and commit.
Second, SPF is non-negotiable: retinoids thin the stratum corneum and double your UV sensitivity for the first three months. Third, expect a 'purge' around week three — small bumps as deep clogs surface. This is normal and resolves in two weeks.
If after eight weeks your skin is still inflamed, your retinoid is too strong; step down, not out. Retinoid wins by decades, not weeks. Be patient.
