How to choose your signature fragrance

by Yusuf Aksoy ·

A signature scent is not just a perfume — it is a memory cue, a mood setter, and a small daily ritual. Here is how to find yours without wasting money on the wrong bottles.

Start by listing fragrances you already loved on other people — those are clues to your own preference. Then ask for sample sets covering four families: floral, citrus, woody, and oriental. Wear each one for a full day on bare skin (perfume reacts to your body chemistry) and write down how you feel at hour one, hour four, and hour eight.

The right scent is the one you forget you are wearing until someone compliments you. Avoid making decisions in a store: fluorescent lighting, dozens of competing notes in the air, and a salesperson with a quota will all steer you wrong. Buy small — a 30 ml bottle is plenty for a year of daily wear and lets you switch when seasons change.

The final test: would you wear it tomorrow, and the day after? If yes, you have found a signature.
